AUGUSTA — Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who has never been reserved about expressing his political opinions, announced Wednesday that he will not make an endorsement in the GOP primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Olympia Snowe.
“As June 12 nears, I want to make it clear to Mainers that I’ve decided not to endorse a candidate in the Republican race for United States Senate,” LePage said in a statement issued by his office.
“Republicans have six well-qualified candidates to choose from. May the best person win.”
The GOP candidates are Secretary of State Charlie Summers, Attorney General William Schneider, State Treasurer Bruce Poliquin, former Maine Senate President Rick Bennett, Maine Senate Assistant Majority Leader Debra Plowman, and Scott D’Amboise.
The winner of the June 12 primary will compete in the November general election against Independent Angus King and one of four Democrats on the June primary ballot.
Snowe announced in February that she would not seek re-election.
