The South Portland Police Department announced today that an interactive online crime map is now available to the public.

The crime-mapping website is intended to help reduce crime and improve public safety by raising community awareness, police said.

The map can show the location, time and type of crimes reported in the city, which will allow the public to get a visual representation of what types of crimes are occurring where.

The department said the new technology will help residents and business be better informed about crime in the city so they can make informed decisions about personal safety and protecting property.

The program also enables users to get occasional emails with neighborhood crime information.

The map can be found along with other city crime maps at pressherald.com by going to: http://bit.ly/JWzDUb. The South Poprtland crime map also can be accessed at www.raidsonline.com or www.southportland.org/pd.
