KITTERY – Rep. Chellie Pingree is visiting the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard today, gathering information about the damage to the U.S.S. Miami, the nuclear submarine that caught fire May 23 and burned for about 10 hours.

Pingree, a First District Democrat, is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. This is her second trip to the shipyard to meet with Navy officials about the submarine.

The Navy is in the midst of its damage assessment trying to determine whether the $900 million submarine can be repaired and if it would be financially prudent to do so.

The sub is in dry dock at the shipyard, three months into a 20-month overhaul designed to extend its functional lifespan. Pingree plans to meet with the press at noon following her meeting with Navy officials to discuss what she learns.
