DEERFIELD, N.H. — New Hampshire police say a 9-year-old girl was seriously hurt in an accident in which her father drove their pickup truck off the road and struck a tree. He was accused of driving while intoxicated.

Police said the pickup swerved on Route 107 in Deerfield on Sunday and struck a tree on the passenger’s side.

They arrested 30-year-old Bradford Gannon of Rochester. He said he swerved to avoid a deer.

The girl was hospitalized in Boston; her condition wasn’t immediately known Tuesday.

Police said Gannon has two previous DWI convictions and had been out on bail on a DWI arrest in Maine. He is being held on $10,000 bail. It was not known if he had a lawyer.
