On June 22, The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram will honor the state’s best high school athletes at our annual banquet. A player of the year for each sport will be honored and we’ll name our male and female Athletes of the Year. What makes this year so special is that it’s the 25th year of honoring Maine’s best, so we will be catching up with all our Athletes of the Year since the first banquet in 1988. Today, we honor the winners from 1999.

JENN MOREAU, Mt. Ararat

IN HIGH SCHOOL: Moreau set Class A state records in the 800 meters indoors and the mile outdoors. She also won the 1,600 meters at the New England championships in Providence, R.I.

SINCE HIGH SCHOOL: Competed in middle-distance events at Syracuse University. Teaches health and physical education at Holliston (Mass.) High School, where she is head coach of the indoor and outdoor track teams.

WHAT IT MEANT TO WIN: “When I won that award I was very overwhelmed with excitement because there were some really talented athletes who were also in contention.”

ROGER LEVESQUE, Falmouth

IN HIGH SCHOOL: Scored a state-record 106 goals in leading Falmouth to four consecutive trips to the Western Class C final. Played pivotal roles on Class C state championship basketball and baseball teams.

SINCE HIGH SCHOOL: Earned All-America honors twice at Stanford University, where he majored in economics. Currently in his fourth season as a striker for Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders.

WHAT IT MEANT TO WIN: “Obviously it was a great honor to be among so many great athletes and to be recognized. I think I’ve become more appreciative of it over the years. For me, the recognition was not only due just to me, but I was with a great group of athletes at Falmouth at the time.”
