Andree Martin, formerly of Portland and Scarborough, has spent her career teaching golf to all ages and abilities.
A 2007 Maine Golf Hall of Fame inductee, Martin was recently hired as director of instruction at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
After graduating from the University of South Florida in 1984, Martin, who graduated from Portland High where she played on the golf team, started working for the Ping Golf Co. Then it was on to Titleist before the LPGA hired her as a golf instructor. Martin found her niche teaching the game and has pursued it on both coasts, and also in Denver and Park City, Utah.
For the last five years, Martin has taught in Park City in the summer. She was looking for a year-round teaching position. Fairbanks Ranch is an upscale course with 27 holes. PGA Tour Hall of Famer Gene Littler is a member.
“It’s been awesome,” said Martin of her new position. “In two weeks, I’ve already given seven ladies clinics. This is a very active golfing membership. We have 450 members with a lot of single-digit handicappers.”
Martin was hired to develop golf instruction programs for adults and youth. Her instruction also encompasses the mental side of golf.
When she was based in Los Angeles, working for the LPGA teaching golf to inner-city kids, Martin had her PGA Playing Ability tournament at Fairbanks Ranch as part of her PGA certification.
The program she started is now The First Tee of Los Angeles.
TEE TO GREEN: The opening Maine State Golf Association Junior tournament is June 21 at The Woodlands. The tournaments run through August. It costs $10 for an MSGA membership. All tournaments have a $23 entry fee.
The field for the Charlie’s Maine Open, June 19-20 at the Augusta Country Club in Manchester, is full with 156 players. Defending champion Michael Carbone of Brewster, Mass., is entered.
The Maine Open pro-am is June 18. The tournament benefits the MSGA Scholarship Fund. To play, email: sam@mesga.org.
