PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. — Rescuers have found a Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate student who got lost while hiking in the White Mountain National Forest.

Authorities say the 22-year-old from New South Wales, Australia, started his hike with a friend on Sunday. The friend left him, saying he was hiking too slowly. But when the friend returned to their car, the other hiker wasn’t there.

Early Monday, New Hampshire’s Fish and Game Department organized a search with the Appalachian Mountain Club. They found footprints going down a drainage area off of the Avalanche Ski Trail, which led them to the missing hiker. He was in good condition, only suffering from a few cuts and bruises.
