KITTERY — Kittery Police Chief Paul Callaghan said a Portsmouth woman has been charged with embezzling funds from a local business where she worked as a bookkeeper.
Deborah Sterry, 55, has been charged with theft by unauthorized taking, a Class B crime, and is scheduled to appear in York County Superior Court on Sept. 6.
Callaghan said Sterry allegedly took more than $29,000 in funds from Carl’s Meat Market and Golden Harvest.
Police began investigating the case earlier this month after the owner of Carl’s Meat Market told authorities he suspected his bookkeeper of stealing funds.
