GORHAM — Gorham police say they have apprehended the suspect in an armed robbery that took place early this morning at a Main Street pharmacy.

Lt. Christopher Sanborn said 28-year-old John J. Vernon Jr. of Saco led police on a brief vehicle chase following the robbery at the Community Pharmacy, 365 Main St.

Police received a phone call at 8:38 a.m. Sunday alerting them that a man had entered the store and demanded that employees hand over all of the store’s supply of oxycodone.

Vernon fled in a vehicle but crashed at a rotary on Narragansett Street. He ran on foot from the crash scene and was apprehended a short while later by Gorham police.

He faces charges of armed robbery, theft, terrorizing, eluding an officer, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, criminal speed and operating after suspension.

Vernon was being held Sunday night at the Cumberland County Jail on $75,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in Portland on Monday afternoon.
