Gov. Paul LePage will tour Phantom Fireworks in Scarborough at 2 p.m. today.

Phantom Fireworks is a national consumer fireworks chain. The Scarborough store is one of several fireworks retailers that have opened since LePage signed a law legalizing the sale of consumer fireworks in Maine.

A host of municipalities have since prohibited the use of fireworks amid safety and noise concerns by town officials and residents. The law enacted by the Legislature allowed towns to craft ordinances that prohibit the use of fireworks.

The Fourth of July is Wednesday. It will be the first July Fourth holiday since the new law was enacted.

State Fire Marshal Joe Thomas will accompany the governor at Phantom Fireworks to discuss fireworks safety for the coming Independence Day holiday.  Phantom Fireworks’ Vice President William Weimer will also attend the gathering.

Eight fireworks stores have opened in seven towns across the state.
