SOUTH PORTLAND — The Coast Guard is holding a change-of-command ceremony for the cutter Jefferson Island.

The 110-foot patrol boat has been based in Portland since its commissioning in 1991 with primary missions including search and rescue, law enforcement, fisheries enforcement and homeland security.

The formal ceremony is scheduled for this afternoon.

The event is meant to signal to the ship’s officers and enlisted personnel that command is maintained without interruption even as it’s relinquished by one person and is assumed by another.
