SCARBOROUGH — A California man is facing charges after he was found camping inside a protected area for piping plovers in Scarborough, Maine.
Game wardens found 11 people camping and sitting around a fire in the nesting area at Higgins Beach Thursday night.
The campers took off when they saw the wardens. Wardens say two of the campers were tampering with enclosures set up by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The wardens say they stopped them and brought them back to the camp site, where they found an open back pack belonging to 18-year-old Mark Brazil of Studio City, Calif. Wardens say the pack contained a department camera and a police scanner.
Brazil is charged with receiving stolen property and having an unpermitted fire in a state wildlife management area.
