NEW PORTLAND – An Embden man died late Friday in a single-car accident on Wire Bridge Road, according to Somerset County Sheriff’s Detective Lt. Carl E. Gottardi II.

Ryan Nile, 24, was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Corsica about 9:41p.m. when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and it struck a tree head on, Gottardi said in a news release.

The car just missed hitting a home at 92 Wire Bridge Road, he said.

Nile was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two passengers, Nichole Nichols, 20, and Christopher Woodard, 27, both of Embden, were injured in the accident, according to Gottardi.

Nichols was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, and Woodard was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and later transferred to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Cpl. Eugene Cole and Deputy Don Avery responded to the scene and investigated the crash, which remains under investigation, according to Gottardi.

“It appears that speed and alcohol may be a factor in the accident,” he said.

The Corsica was destroyed in the accident, Gottardi said. Both the Maine State Police and Franklin County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene, as did New Portland Fire Department, Sugarloaf Rescue and A&M Ambulance Service.

State police are reconstructing the crash, according to Gottardi.
