UMaine men’s basketball opponents include ACC defending champ Florida State

Atlantic Coast Conference champion Florida State tops the list of opponents for the University of Maine men’s basketball team for the 2012-13 season, the school announced Tuesday in releasing the schedule.

Maine will play the Seminoles at Tallahassee, Fla. on Dec. 9 as part of a 13-game non-conference schedule that includes nine away games.

Florida State went 1-1 in the NCAA Division I tournment, beating St. Bonaventure before losing to Cincinnati.

The Black Bears will have two Ivy League opponents, including a season-opener at Dartmouth on Nov. 10 and Brown on Nov. 17 in Orono.

Maine will also have twin opponents from two other conferences. The Black Bears will play two teams from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference — at home against Siena on Nov. 25 and at Marist on Dec. 16.

Holy Cross and Army of the Patriot League are among Maine’s away games. Maine will play the Crusaders on Nov. 14 and the Golden Knights on Dec. 14.

Excluding Florida State, none of the non-conference opponents finished better than fourth in their leagues.

Maine will also play Seton Hall (Big East), Duquesne (Atlantic-10), Florida Gulf Coast (Atlantic Sun), Northeastern (Colonial Athletic), Quinnipiac (Northeast) and Division III Fisher, of Boston.

The team’s 16-game America East Conference schedule begins Jan. 2 in Orono against Boston University, one of the eight teams Maine will play home and away.
