WINDHAM – Jenna Soucy knew she didn’t have much time so she made the most of it.

Soucy scored her first goal of the season with 13 seconds left in overtime to lift Windham to a 2-1 girls’ soccer win against Gorham in an SMAA game Wednesday night.

“Luisa (Sbardella) passed me the ball with her left foot, and I just knew I had only seconds left so I shot with my left foot, and it just squeaked into the corner,” said Soucy, a sophomore who sent a blast from the right of the penalty area inside the far post for the 11th goal of her career to lift the Eagles to a rare win over the Rams.

“I think that was our first win over Gorham in a very long time,” Windham Coach Deb Lebel said. “They’re always a great team and we always have trouble with them.”

Statistically, the Eagles held a decisive edge in play. They held a 24-11 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corners, but Gorham made it difficult for them to get a clear shot off.

“Windham is an excellent team,” Gorham Coach Jeanne Zarrilli said. “They had some great opportunities all game that were really scary.

“We played a tough defensive game.”

Gorham (1-1) really didn’t get many chances to score, but the Rams managed to take a brief lead with just over seven minutes left when Kali St. Germain curled in her fourth goal of the season from 10 yards after collecting the ball off a defender on the right side of the goal.

Less than a minute later, Melissa Morton sent a right-footed shot from 22 yards out on the left side into the far corner to make it 1-1.

“With a good team like Windham, they’re going to wear you down,” Zarrilli said “It was just one defender got beat and the girl got the shot off.”

It was a big early-season win for the Eagles (2-0).

“Finally we’ve got a talented group and if we can get it together, we’re going to do some good things,” Lebel said. “The girls have set some goals this year, and we’ve got to keep digging to reach those goals. But we do have to improve on our finishing clearly.”

Melissa Roberts started in goal for the Rams, and she made eight saves before leaving with an injury after sliding to prevent Emily Gilman from getting off an uncontested shot in the 63rd minute of the game. Gilman beat Roberts to a through ball in the right side of the penalty area, but her shot rolled just beyond the far post.

Renae Staples, who finished the game in the Gorham goal, made three saves.

Kate Kneeland made four saves for the Eagles.

The Eagles held the slight edge in play during the first half, outshooting Gorham by a 9-4 margin, but neither team could control the ball for long.

Windham played nearly eight minutes of the first half without senior stopper Jordan Symonds, who left the game after colliding with a Gorham player near midfield.
