1. Greely: The defending Class A state champs remain the standard for all other volleyball programs. While the numbers might be a little down this year, the Rangers have some outstanding talent, led by Haleigh Roach, Dani Cimino, Lauren Weickert, Delaney Nolin and Lexie Foster. They’re strong in all phases and will get better as the season progresses.

2. Biddeford: Nine seniors return from last year’s playoff team, making the Tigers a formidable opponent. They’re very athletic and deep. Look for Coach Ruth Shaw to rotate several players in the lineup, which will be led by seniors Mariah Hebert, Katelyn Lebreux and Autumn Dube, and freshman Jocelyn Moody.

3. Scarborough: The Red Storm lost several key players from last year’s Class A state runner-up, but still should be among the teams to beat. Scarborough thrives on its defense, which is phenomenal at times. Senior captain Lilly Lemire sets the tone with her all-around play, aided by juniors Lauren Piper and Mary Cleary.

4. Yarmouth: Although eight players are gone from last year’s Class B state champs, the Clippers should be among the top contenders again. Senior Gina Robertson returns after leading the team in points off serves and service aces last year. Defense will be the team’s strength, led by senior Lindsay Tyler and junior Maddy Maierhofer.

5. Gorham: Last year’s surprise Class A semifinalist won’t surprise anyone this year. The Rams are going to be among the top contenders again, led by senior outside hitter/middle hitter Lindsay Chapman and senior setter Kaitlyn Seehusen. Gorham has a strong sophomore group that could provide the difference in close matches.
