Army Sgt. Robert F. Fournier has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal, awarded to individuals who have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism or meritorious service or achievement in the Army. Fournier is an ammunition team chief assigned to Fort Hood, Texas. He is the son of Patricia Finn of Portland and is married to Elizabeth Ross of Southington, Conn. Fournier graduated from Portland High School in 2004 and has served in the military for eight years.

Army National Guard Pvt. Christopher R. Sylvester has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Sylvester is the son of Kimberly Sylvester of Topsham, and is a 2010 graduate of Mt. Ararat High School, Topsham.

Marine Corps Pfc. Benjamin N. Chamberlain, son of Judith Shaw of Brunswick and Norm Chamberlain of New Gloucester, recently graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Chamberlain is a 2009 graduate of Brunswick High School.

Cadet Jack Verrill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Verrill of South Berwick, has completed cadet basic training at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. He is a graduate of Marshwood High School, Eliot.

A Sept. 11 commemoration is planned for the VA Maine Healthcare System, Togus campus at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The ceremony takes place at the chapel, Building 235, and is open to veterans, their families and the public. For information, contact Katey Gagnon-Rood at 623-8411, ext. 5470.
