SCARBOROUGH — It was all smiles in the Walker family rivalry Tuesday night.

Ely and Abby Walker combined for three goals to help lift Scarborough to a 6-0 victory over Portland in a Southern Maine Activities Association Class A field hockey game.

The sibling’s performance continued a trend to open the season as the Walkers – Ely is a senior while Abby is a sophomore – have had been consistent producers for the Red Storm (4-0).

“The whole team works really hard so we can be in our positions,” said Ely Walker, who scored once against the Bulldogs.

“Just knowing that everyone is in their place just helps us nail some goals in.”

The elder Walker has scored at least once in each of Scarborough’s four wins to give her family bragging rights.

“I’m more competitive than her but when it comes to goals, I don’t really count them as much,” said Abby Walker, who guessed she has three goals after scoring two against Portland.

“It’s nice when she gets goals but I don’t really count hers or mine. I know for that game and then after that I don’t think about it.

“But she remembers and she reminds me every day.”

Even though Ely Walker is enjoying the family scoring lead, she knows there are lots of games still remaining. Plus, she’s well aware of where the passes are coming from before she finds the back of the net.

“Hopefully she doesn’t catch up but I have to give her some credit because she assists on most of my goals.”

The Red Storm didn’t experience much in the way of pushback from the Bulldogs (0-4).

Katie Granzier gave Scarborough a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game when her shot traveled through traffic and past Portland freshman goalkeeper Gianna Gaudett.

The Red Storm ended up dominating most of the opening 10 minutes before the Bulldogs finally created some offensive pressure.

“Typically that’s how it operates in this sport,” said Red Storm Coach Kerry Mariello. “The first 10 minutes are your most crucial minutes where everybody is active and gung-ho and the adrenaline is going for both teams. Then you start getting your momentum and the tempo and start playing your game and relaxing.”

When Scarborough regained control of the ball, it quickly traveled the length of the field leading to Abby Walker’s first of the game to make it 2-0. Her second was scored 10 minutes later for a 3-0 halftime lead.

“This is the first game we’ve had our full squad and we’re just getting used to each other,” said Portland Coach Beth Arsenault. “They created some opportunities and if they put in this kind of effort for the remainder of our schedule we’re definitely going to have different results.”
