EAST BROOKFIELD, Mass. — A Barre woman who gave her 69-year-old mother heroin instead of her prescribed pain medication has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Lisa Gazaille pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges including assault and battery on a disabled or elderly person causing injury and distribution of heroin as part of deal with prosecutors. She was sentenced to 18 months in jail with six months to serve and the balance suspended for two years.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that police responded to her mother’s home in July after the 69-year-old woman called to say she might have been given the wrong medication.

The 47-year-old Gazaille allegedly told police she gave her mother heroin orally, telling the older woman it was crushed oxycodone that had been prescribed for severe stomach pains.

The judge’s sentence also applies to a second case in which Ms. Gazaille admitted stealing from her mother.
