SOUTH PORTLAND — South Portland police are asking people to avoid Evans Street while crews repair a water main break.

The break was reported at 10 a.m. Thursday on Evans Street near Bonnybriar Road. Repairs are expected to take several hours, according to police.

The break was caused when New England Utility Contractors hit the water main, said Michelle Clements, spokeswoman for the Portland Water District.

This break is the seventh since Aug. 25 and the 14th this year in South Portland. The Portland Water District launched an investigation into the cause after a Sept. 6 water main break damaged J.P. Thornton’s Bar and Grille and Greener Postures Yoga in the 740 Broadway Plaza.

The Evans Street break occurred at the intersection with Bonnybriar Road. Evans Street runs between Broadway and Highland Avenue.

Evans Street currently is open only to local traffic, which must approach from the Highland Avenue direction, according to police.
