NBA ‘floppers’ will be penalized with an escalating fine scale

The NBA will penalize floppers this season, fining players for repeated violations of an act a league official said has “no place in our game.”

Those exaggerated falls to the floor may fool the referees and fans during the game, but officials at league headquarters plan to take a look for themselves afterward.

Players will get a warning the first time, then be fined $5,000 for a second violation. The fines increase to $10,000 for a third offense, $15,000 for a fourth and $30,000 the fifth time. Six or more could lead to a suspension.

• Dana Davis, vice president of basketball operations for the Memphis Grizzlies, was found dead in his apartment. He was 56.

The Commercial Appeal reported Davis had not been heard from since Tuesday.

HALL OF FAME: York High will induct 10 more standouts into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Nov. 25. The new inductees are Tony Anni, a football player who graduated in 1985; Lani Boardman, basketball, 2001; Brian Carl, wrestling, 2001; Bill Fisher, cross country, 1948; Donald Hansen, football, 1966; Shelby Marshall, softball, 1989; Todd Spelman, tennis, 2000; Hal Stanwood, football, 1971; Becky Wacker, hockey, 2003; and John Welch, a long-time contributor, 1940.

The induction will be held at the American Legion Hall in York, beginning at 1 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person and available at the high school. The deadline to purchase tickets is Nov. 9. CHINA OPEN: Two-time champion Novak Djokovic reached the quarterfinals, dismissing Carlos Berlocq of Argentina 6-1, 6-3 in Beijing.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Ronaldo had his second straight three-goal match to earn Real Madrid a 4-1 victory at Ajax, with Karim Benzema scoring the other goal on an amazing overhead kick.

Arsenal, FC Porto and Malaga joined Real Madrid in earning second straight wins in the competition.

Manchester City got a 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund, courtesy of Mario Balotelli’s late penalty kick.

AC Milan needed a late own goal to seal a 3-2 win at Zenit and is two points behind Malaga, which won 3-0 over Anderlecht.

Arsenal beat Olympiakos 3-1, and Porto overcame Paris Saint-Germain 1-0.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Dana Hall scored in the 65th minute in a 1-0 win over Berwick Academy at Wellesley, Mass.

BOYS’ SOCCER: Jamal Frazer Borden and Ethan Morrow each finished with two goals and an assist to lead Hyde to a 4-3 win over Berwick Academy at Bath.

Borden scored the winner for the Phoenix on a penalty kick with nine minutes left.
