Lockout talks resume after breaking off Tuesday

The NHL and the players’ association quietly resumed collective bargaining talks in Toronto on Friday, the 20th day of the lockout, and expect to be in contact again in the upcoming days.

NHLPA spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon said any discussions this weekend won’t be in person.

The meeting on Friday marked the first negotiating session since talks broke off Tuesday in New York, where the sides had met four times in five days to discuss issues other than core economics.

AHL: The Portland Pirates assigned rookie goalie Mike Lee and rookie center Maxime Villemaire to the Gwinnett Gladiators, their ECHL affiliate in Georgia, reducing the number of players in the AHL team’s training camp to 26.

CHINA OPEN: Top-seeded Novak Djokovic needed only 53 minutes to reach the semifinals at Beijing, with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jurgen Melzer.

On the women’s side, top-seeded Victoria Azarenka and second-seeded Maria Sharapova advanced.

JAPAN OPEN: Defending champion Andy Murray moved into the semifinals at Tokyo with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory over seventh-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.

In other quarterfinals, eighth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan beat second-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-4, and Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus topped Dmitry Tursunov of Russia, 6-2, 6-4.

INVESTIGATION: The U.S. Speedskating coaching scandal got messier.

One speedskater, reigning national short-track champion Simon Cho, faces a disciplinary hearing after confessing Friday that he tampered with a Canadian rival’s skate at the 2011 world team championship. Short track interim coach Jun Hyung Yeo was suspended by the federation for failing to report that tampering.

The man at the center of the scandal, head coach Jae Su Chun, remains suspended and also could be disciplined for not reporting the tampering.

GOLF

PGA: Jonas Blixt shot his second straight 7-under 64 for a share of the second-round lead with Brendon de Jonge in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at Las Vegas.

Blixt, from Sweden, and de Jonge, from Zimbabwe, are winless on the PGA Tour.

Ryan Moore, the former UNLV player who matched the TPC Summerlin record Thursday with a 61, was a stroke back after a 68.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Branden Grace shot a 5-under 67 and extended his lead to five shots after the second round of the Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews, Scotland. Joel Sjoholm matched Grace’s score of 67 to move into second at 12 under, tied with Thorbjorn Olesen.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Russ Cochran topped the SAS Championship leaderboard in his return from a back injury, hitting all 18 greens in regulation and shooting a 6-under 66 at Cary, N.C.
