NEW GLOUCESTER – Crews from three towns prevented a fire from spreading from a shed to a nearby house on Lewiston Road.

Firefighters were called to 887 Lewiston Road shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday for a fire that started in a 16- by 20-foot shed located within 50 feet of a house.

Four engines from New Gloucester and an engine from Gray and an engine from Poland responded, according to Roger Lavasseur, New Gloucester deputy fire chief.

Crews quickly knocked down the fire, Lavasseur said, and no one was injured or displaced. He estimated the damage to the shed to be $3,000.

Lavasseur said he believes the cause of the fire was rags soaked in a solvent used to treat wood.
