BANGOR — A union representing 4,000 paper and pulp mill workers in Maine is throwing its support behind former Gov. Angus King in his run for the U.S. Senate.

The Maine Labor Council of the United Steelworkers District 4 is endorsing King, who is running as an independent against Republican Charlie Summers, Democrat Deborah Dill and three other independent candidates.

Patrick Carleton, president of the local union representing workers at the Sappi paper mill in Skowhegan, said union members are dismayed with the direction of Republican candidates for Congress.

He said union members are encouraged by King’s longtime identity with Democrats and his defense of working families.
