WELLS — Wells High has suspended some football players for violating team and school policy.

Head coach Tim Roche and athletic director Jack Molloy wouldn’t comment on who the players were or what the violation was. Molloy said it happened this week.

Wells plays at top-ranked Marshwood in South Berwick Friday night in a Western Maine Class B semifinal playoff game. Wells captured the Class B state championship last year.

“The truth is that some football players aren’t playing because they got into trouble,” said Roche.

“It’s kids being kids. They’re 15 to 17 years old. They made a mistake. The school dealt with it by the handbook. I’m proud of the way the administration and the coaches handled it. Hopefully, the kids have learned a valuable lesson. The players with us will be ready to play and play well,” he said.

A week ago, No. 5 Wells edged No. 4 Greely, 9-7, in the quarterfinal round to advance.
