WATERVILLE — Washington political reporter Bob Woodward is being honored by Colby College in Maine for courageous journalism.

Colby College’s annual Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award is being presented to Woodward on Sunday at the liberal arts school in Waterville.

The Lovejoy Award has been given annually since 1952. It honors the memory of Elijah Parish Lovejoy, an 1826 Colby graduate who was killed in 1837 in Alton, Ill., while defending his abolitionist press against a pro-slavery mob.

Last year’s recipient was National Public Radio foreign correspondent Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson, who has covered conflict and social change from the Middle East to North Africa.
