As lockout nears 2 months, owners, players resume negotiations in N.Y. after day off
NHL owners and players were back at the bargaining table Sunday after a one-day break.
The sides met for about 90 minutes at the NHL office in Manhattan in an effort to end the lockout that is in its 58th day. There are no plans yet to meet again.
Talks took place for four straight days last week before heated discussions ended the run Friday night.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Matteo Manassero holed a 12-foot putt for eagle to beat South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen on the third playoff hole at the Singapore Open. Oosthuizen and Manassero finished at 13-under 271 in regulation.
LPGA TOUR: Cristie Kerr closed with a 3-under 69 to win the Lorena Ochoa Invitational by one stroke at Guadalajara, Mexico, and Stacy Lewis tied for fourth to wrap up the player of the year award.
ATP FINALS: Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic advanced to Monday’s championship match in London.
Federer, a six-time champion at the season-ending event, beat Andy Murray 7-6 (5), 6-2. The top-ranked Djokovic defeated Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
SPANISH LEAGUE: Lionel Messi surpassed Pele’s milestone of goals in a calendar year, scoring for the 75th and 76th time in 2012 to lead Barcelona to a 4-2 victory at Mallorca.
WORLD CUP: Andre Myhrer of Sweden won the first men’s slalom of the season, holding off defending overall champion Marcel Hirscher of Austria at Levi, Finland.
EASTERN SECTIONAL: Morgan Sewall, 15, of Scarborough, placed sixth overall among 12 skaters in the junior ladies competition at Hyannis, Mass.
Sewall landed a triple salchow and double toeloop in combination for the highest scoring element in her free skate. She placed fifth in Saturday’s short program and sixth in the free skate, with a total score of 110.64.
The top four skaters advance to the national championship in January in Omaha, Neb.
NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS: Portland Boxing Club novice featherweight Danny Pang advanced to the finals of the New England championships with a 4-1 decision over Marcus Fowler of Lowell, Mass.
Other Portland Boxing Club winners were open featherweight John Lopez, who had a third-round TKO over Frederick Mercado of Worcester, Mass.; and open middleweight Jason Quirk, who won a 5-0 decision over Neal Sullivan of Worcester, Mass.
The finals will be at the Stevens Avenue Armory on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m.
