Biddeford Mayor Alan Casavant is the new winner of the House District 137 race after military and overseas absentee ballots were added to the vote total on Friday.

Casavant, a Democrat who has represented the district in Biddeford and Kennebunkport for three terms, edged out Republican challenger William Guay by 15 votes, according to the Secretary of State’s office.

After election day voting, Guay appeared to be the winner by a margin of 72 votes.

Megan Sanborn, spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office, said after the military and overseas ballots were counted, Casavant had 2,579 votes to Guay’s 2,564 votes.

Guay said he has requested a recount.

Sanborn said this appears to be the only race where the outcome was changed after 3,000 military and overseas ballots were counted.
