Top-ranked Djokovic ends season with victory over Federer at ATP finals

Novak Djokovic recovered from early breaks in both sets to beat Roger Federer 7-6 (6), 7-5 Monday in the championship match at the ATP finals in London.

Federer broke Djokovic’s serve to take a 2-0 lead in the first set, then did it again to open to the second set, but the top-ranked Serb rebounded each time.

It was Djokovic’s second victory at the year-end tournament for the top eight players in the world. He also won in 2008, when the tournament was in Shanghai.

VONN AILING: Lindsey Vonn has been admitted to a hospital in Vail, Colo., because of an undisclosed illness.

Her spokesman, Lewis Kay, had no other updates on the U.S. skier’s condition.

The four-time World Cup overall champion skipped a slalom competition in Finland this past weekend to prepare for upcoming races in Aspen. She also had a promotional event lined up for last Friday in Vail, but had to cancel because she was sick.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Chelsea captain John Terry will be sidelined for “weeks not months” after a scan found ligament damage in his right knee is not as bad as feared when he was injured during a 1-1 draw Sunday against Liverpool.

RONALDO INJURED: Cristiano Ronaldo will miss Portugal’s exhibition game at Gabon on Wednesday after sustaining a gash over his left eye while playing for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo missed the second half of his club’s match against Levante on Sunday after defender David Navarro’s elbow cut the Portugal captain. Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho said his star forward temporarily lost his sight.

U.S. MEN: Jozy Altidore is back on the roster for the final game of the season, an exhibition Wednesday against Russia.

LAMOUR WIN PRO DEBUT: Portland Boxing Club middleweight Russell Lamour Jr. scored a knockout 62 seconds into his pro debut Saturday night in Providence, R.I., beating John Downey of Spencer, Mass.

TRACK AND FIELD

OWENS AWARD: Olympic gold medalists Allyson Felix and Ashton Eaton were named recipients of the Jesse Owens Award as the top track and field athletes in the U.S.

It’s the record fourth time Felix has been honored. She won the 200 meters at the London Games for her first individual Olympic gold, and also was on winning 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams.

Eaton broke the decathlon world record at the U.S. Olympic trials, topping 9,000 points, then won the event in London.
