WALES — A 41-year-old deer hunter shot and killed a 49-year-old man, who was also hunting deer off of East Road on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Both men are from Wales, but were hunting separately, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. Authorities have not released their names.

The incident was reported at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday. Two dozen game wardens and 10 state troopers responded, according to IF&W.

The Maine Warden Service, with help from the Monmouth and Wales fire and rescue departments, were investigating the incident throughout the night Tuesday and planned to continue Wednesday morning.

The wardens are working with the Attorney General’s Office and the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
