LEWISTON – Nicole Garland made 4 of 6 3-point attempts and finished with 16 points to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 68-54 women’s basketball win over Bates College Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.

Jordan Grant added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Huskies (3-0), who led 37-30 at halftime. Southern Maine made 11 for 13 free throws in the first half to gain an edge over Bates (0-3).

Molly Brown paced the Bobcats with 18 points. Allie Beaulieu helped out with 13 points and Taryn O’Connell pulled down 11 rebounds.

 

COLBY 72, THOMAS 40: Diana Manduca scored 20 points to lead Colby College (2-1) over Thomas College (1-1) in a nonconference game at Waterville.

The Terriers kept the game within three points until Manduca hit a pair of 3s to help stretch the Mules’ lead to 23-11 with seven minutes left in the first half. Colby ended the half ahead 39-20, hitting 6 of 14 3-point attempts.

Jen Nale and Carlylanne Wolfington came off the bench for Colby in the second half and added 10 and 11 points.

Freshman Megan Pelletier led Thomas with 15 points.

 

ST. JOSEPH’S 58, UM-FARMINGTON 52: Morgan Cahill scored 12 points and collected 13 rebounds to help St. Joseph’s (1-0) defeat the University of Maine-Farmington (0-2) at Standish.

The Monks took a 34-27 lead in the first half, shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor (14 of 29). The Beavers were dismal, making just 9 of 34 field-goal attempts in the first half.

UMF bounced back in the second half and claimed the lead with 5:57 left when Holly Oliver made a 3-point jumper. Abby Young answered with a layup for the Monks to regain the lead and the Beavers did not score again.

Lindsay Ranquist scored 13 for the Beavers and Kenni Norton provided 11.

 

(5) NOTRE DAME 93, MERCER 36: Natalie Achonwa scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Fighting Irish (3-0) over the visiting Bears (3-1).

 

(7) LOUISVILLE 94, CENTRAL FLORIDA 73: Sara Hammond scored 15 points to lead a balanced offense as the Cardinals (4-0) topped the Knights (1-4) in the opener of the Hardwood Tournament of Hope at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

(8) GEORGIA 94, SAVANNAH STATE 57: Andy Landers became the seventh Division I women’s coach to reach 800 career victories when the Bulldogs (5-0) beat the visiting Lady Tigers (1-2).

Landers is 800-268 in his 34 seasons at Georgia.

 

(15) TEXAS 80, JACKSON ST. 53: Nneka Enemkpali had 24 points and a career-best 20 rebounds to lead the Longhorns (3-0) over the visiting Tigers (0-3).

HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 4, UMASS-BOSTON 1: The Polar Bears (1-1) scored three goals in the first period in beating the Beacons (2-4-1) at Brunswick.

Mallory Andrews scored at 8:30, and the Polar Bears got two more 80 seconds apart beginning with Schuyler Nardelli with 1:23 left and Ariana Bourque just before the clock expired.

Chelsea MacNeil also scored and Tara Connolly made 16 saves for the win.

 

COLBY 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Natalie Fischer and Annie Papadellis scored in the first period and Brianne Wheeler stopped 20 shots as the Mules (1-2) held off the Huskies (1-2-2) at Waterville.

Kailey Bubier scored and Jenn Fuller stopped 31 shots for Southern Maine.
