PORTLAND — Three businesses are being honored for their contributions to Portland’s economic vitality.

The State Theatre, EnviroLogix and the Rosemont Market and Bakery are the winners of the Portland Development Corp.’s annual awards for achievement, which will be given out Wednesday.

The State Theatre won the organization’s Economic Development Achievement award, while EnviroLogix and Rosemont Market and Bakery were named the large and small businesses of the year, respectively.

“The criteria (for the awards) are based on significant economic contributions and impacts, as well as building a strong sense of community,” said Greg Mitchell, Portland’s economic development director and a staff member of the Portland Development Corp.

A list of candidates for the awards is developed by the staff, Mitchell said, then a committee makes selections to recommend to the Portland Development Corp.’s board. The considerations include the number and quality of jobs that a company supports, its commitment to investing in the community and its ability to promote the city in a positive way.

Mitchell said the organization also looks for “a strong track record of sustainability” in award winners.

He said the Portland Development Corp. was impressed with the State Theatre’s renovation and its record of bringing top musical acts to the city.

That effort was crowned this year when the theater’s general manager, Lauren Wayne, persuaded Mumford & Sons to add Portland as a tour stop, putting on a show on the city’s Eastern Promenade that attracted 15,000 people.

If not for Wayne and the State Theatre, Mitchell said, “I dare say we would not have had the opportunity to put Portland on the world stage.”

“We are honored to receive the award and hope that we are a catalyst for the downtown district,” said Ron Goglia, owner of Stone Coast Properties, which owns the State Theatre.

Goglia said he thought that renovating the theater would spur other property owners in the area to make improvements. The nearby Baxter Library building was renovated recently into a new home for the VIA Group advertising firm, while the nearby Eastland Park Hotel is undergoing a major renovation.

EnviroLogix develops and manufactures test kits for food production, and has about 100 employees in Portland. The jobs pay well, Mitchell said, and the biomedical industry is one that the Portland Development Corp. is targeting for further growth.

Rosemont Market, which now has four locations, reinforces Portland’s growing reputation as a “foodie” city and has developed relationships with local farmers and other food producers, creating a more sustainable business model.

The Portland Development Corp. works to support Portland’s economic development strategy, reviews and approves requests for loans from the city’s Revolving Loan Program, and provides advice to city officials on use of the city’s tax increment financing program.

The awards will be presented at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the State Theatre.
