Vonn continues her climb on all-time victory list

Lindsey Vonn raced to her 13th World Cup victory at Lake Louise, Alberta, and her 55th overall win Saturday, leading another 1-2 U.S. sweep.

Vonn finished in 1 minute, 52.9 seconds to edge teammate Stacey Cook by 0.52 seconds. In the season-opening downhill Friday, Vonn beat Cook by 1.73 seconds.

Switzerland’s Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden was third in 1:53.52.

Vonn, 28, tied Switzerland’s Vreni Schneider for second place on the World Cup women’s victory list. Austria’s Annamarie Moser-Proell is the leader with 62.

• Matteo Marsaglia of Italy took big risks on a challenging super-G course at Beaver Creek, Colo., for his first World Cup victory.

Finding speed in sections of the hill where others were slowing, Marsaglia finished in 1 minute, 14.68 seconds to edge Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway by 0.27 seconds. Hannes Reichelt of Austria was third, and Ted Ligety of the U.S. took fourth.

• Russia’s Alexander Legkov and Norway’s Marit Bjorgen won World Cup cross-country races at Kuusamo, Finland.

GOLF

WORLD CHALLENGE: Graeme McDowell rolled in two long putts and kept bogeys off his card to maintain the lead at Thousand Oaks, Calif.

McDowell had a 4-under 68 for a two-shot lead over Keegan Bradley (67). Tiger Woods failed to birdie any of the five par 5s, though the tournament host and defending champion stayed in contention with enough birdies late in his round for a 69. He was five shots behind, along with Bo Van Pelt (70).

NEDBANK CHAMPIONS: Bernhard Langer won at Sun CIty, South Africa, by two strokes, despite closing with a 2-over 74.

The German had a three-round total of 7-under 209. Jay Haas was the runner-up.

LUGE

WORLD CUP: Julia Clukey of Augusta finished 21st at Koenigssee, Germany.

Clukey’s two-run, combined time of 1 minute, 44.877 seconds was more than three seconds behind front-runner Natalie Geisenberger of Germany, whose time was 1:41.450.

Clukey is 10th in the overall standings with 70 points; Geisenberger is first with 185.

HARNESS RACING

MAINE HORSE HONORED: Hurricane Emily, owned by Tony Brannigan of Falmouth, was honored by the Harness Horsemen Association of New England as New England Pacer of the Year.

Hurricane Emily, a 10-year-old mare, paced the mile in 1:52 this season at Plainridge (Mass.) Racecourse, tying the track record for aged mares.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Rebecca Siegal and Maggie DuChene each scored 13 points as Berwick Academy (1-1) rolled to a 63-34 win over Portsmouth (R.I.) Abbey (0-1) at South Berwick.

SOCCER

PREMIER LEAGUE: Chelsea’s troubles deepened it lost 3-1 at West Ham, as Manchester United extended its lead to three points.

United twice came from behind to win 4-3 at Reading, after Manchester City had drawn 1-1 at home to Everton.

Chelsea is 10 points behind United, and the European champions are without a win in their last seven league matches.

COLLEGES

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Kealia Ohai scored at 5:53 of the second overtime to lift North Carolina to a 1-0 victory against top-seeded Stanford in the NCAA Division I semifinals at San Diego.

The Tar Heels (14-5-3), making their 26th appearance in the semifinals in 31 years, will go for a record 21st national title against Penn State on Sunday.

• Christine Nairn scored in the second minute of overtime to help Penn State (21-3-2) beat Florida State, 2-1.

Penn State reached the final after losing in three previous semifinals.
