PORTLAND – A new weekly video report, produced by veteran television journalists Susan Kimball and Peggy Keyser, will appear Wednesday on the Portland Press Herald’s website — pressherald.com.

Kimball and Keyser, who once worked for WCSH-TV in Portland, will take Web readers behind the scenes of the Press Herald, interviewing its editors, reporters and other employees.

One of those “Shop Talk” segments may follow the development of a news story from start to finish, Keyser said.

Kimball and Keyser will also produce “Out of Their Element,” a segment focusing on Maine newsmakers as they pursue their little-known private interests.

A third segment will tackle Maine issues and profile interesting Mainers.

“People see your bylines and read your articles, but they don’t know who you guys are,” said Kimball, an award-winning journalist and lawyer who spent 25 years in television news.

Kimball worked at WAGM-TV in Presque Isle before becoming a general assignment reporter for WCSH. Her work was recognized by organizations including The Associated Press, the Maine Association of Broadcasters and the Harry Chapin Foundation in New York, from which she received a national award for reporting on hunger in Maine.

Kimball was inducted into the Maine Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2011.

Keyser began her career in television at Cablevision of Connecticut as a reporter, weather forecaster, field producer and assignment editor. She eventually was promoted to senior producer of “The Fairfield Exchange,” a popular daily talk show.

Keyser moved to Maine to work for WCSH as a weather forecaster on the statewide morning and noon broadcasts. During her tenure, the noon newscast on WCSH became the No. 1 newscast in the market.

Keyser also hosted cooking segments and interviewed Maine newsmakers. She eventually joined the Maine Public Broadcasting Network, hosting two seasons of “True North,” a half-hour show with segments about intriguing Maine people, places and stories.

The first video segments on pressherald.com will include interviews with Portland panhandlers, Maine chef of the year David Turin, who also runs a surf camp at Scarborough Beach State Park, and Press Herald columnist Bill Nemitz.

The segments, which will run two to three minutes, will appear weekly. Kimball and Keyser started videotaping them about two months ago.

Keyser said the idea for the segments grew out of a meeting they had earlier this year with Press Herald Executive Editor Cliff Schechtman.

“Susan and Peggy are two very talented broadcast journalists with intimate knowledge of Maine and its people,” Schechtman said. “I think the viewers of pressherald.com will enjoy their work.”
