WESTBROOK — A false fire alarm at the Canal School Tuesday morning led to an evacuation that sent students out into the rain, leaving them cold and wet.
The elementary school students were allowed to go home early, said Police Capt. Tom Roth. School officials said other students stayed at school and classes resumed as normal.
Roth said police are looking into why the alarm was activated just before 9 a.m. Tuesday. There was no fire.
In light of the recent Newtown, Conn., school shooting, Roth said, he sent out a press release about the incident in case anyone was concerned by seeing police officers and firefighters at the Glenwood Avenue school.
Members of the police and fire departments provided blankets and towels to children, while they waited for school buses that were called to give them a place to stay out of the rain.
