There is something magical about a Christmas snowfall, even a small one and for extreme southern Maine there will likely at least be some snow in the air Christmas morning.  We have a small and very weak system that will cross the area late tomorrow night and exit early Christmas morning.  I hesitate to even use the word "storm" with this event.  The system is coming from the west and is starved for moisture.  Although temperatures will be cold enough for snow, there just won’t be much in the way of moisture with this system to give more than a dusting to perhaps an inch of snow.  The best chance of the ground becoming white, where it is bare now, will be southern Cumberland and York counties.  As you travel north there will not only be less accumulating snow, there won’t  even be flurries.  I think the cutoff for seeing any snow will be around Portland.  Whatever snow does fall will be over by mid-morning Christmas and skies will brighten thereafter.

The air behind this system isn’t very cold and temperatures Christmas night will fall into the teens in most locals.  Wednesday dawns bright and sunny with seasonable temperatures and light winds.  If you are headed back to the malls to make returns or off to work roads will be dry.  

Our break won’t last long as the next system is poised to move through Wednesday night and Thursday.  Right now snow will breakout across the area overnight Wednesday and continue into Thursday.  The mixed precipitation/rain line will be moving north and west during the day Thursday and coastal areas will most likely see mixing or a complete changeover. 

This next storm will move up from the south and will be loaded with moisture.  The two images below show the general position of the storm Wednesday night through later Thursday.  I will be fine tuning the forecast for this storm over the next couple of days, but a foot of snow for some part of southern Maine isn’t out of the question.
