Falmouth beats Greely to capture Dudley Cup

Freshman Ryan Bonnvie made 24 saves in his first varsity start, and Hugh Grygiel scored twice in the third period Tuesday as Falmouth claimed the Dudley Cup with a 3-1 boys’ hockey victory over Greely at Family Ice Center.

Grygiel broke a 1-1 tie 3:52 into the third with an assist from Chris Samaras, then added an empty-net goal with 19 seconds remaining.

Falmouth (4-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Andre Clement. Peter Hurley tied it for Greely (4-1) late in the second period.

TENNIS

HOPMAN CUP: The United States rallied past France 2-1 for its second victory in the tournament, with John Isner and Venus Williams capturing the decisive mixed doubles at Perth, Australia.

France won the opening singles when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overwhelmed Isner, 6-3, 6-2. Williams was two games away from losing her singles match, trailing 4-1 in the second set before she rallied to defeat Mathilde Johansson, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

The Americans won the mixed doubles 6-7 (5), 6-2, 10-8, taking six of the last seven points in the match tiebreaker.

BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL: Maria Sharapova withdrew from the tournament because of an injured right collarbone that left her unable to serve. She said she didn’t want to aggravate the injury with the Australian Open two weeks away.

Petra Kvitova, the 2011 Brisbane champion, lost 6-4, 7-5 to Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a season-opening tournament that has proved rough for many of the top players.

Serena Williams, however, had no such problems. She carried her relentless winning form into 2013, reaching the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alize Cornet.

QATAR OPEN: Top-seeded David Ferrer rallied to defeat German qualifier Dustin Brown 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round at Doha, Qatar.

No. 5 seed Jeremy Chardy, seventh-seeded Feliciano Lopez and eighth-seeded Pablo Andujar all lost.

ASB CLASSIC: Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska swept past 2011 champion Greta Arn 6-2, 6-2 to reach the second round at Auckland, New Zealand.

SOCCER

PREMIER LEAGUE: Two goals apiece from strikers Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez gave Manchester United a routine 4-0 victory over Wigan, maintaining a seven-point lead over Manchester City.

Manchester City eased past Stoke 3-0 at home, getting goals from Pablo Zabaleta, Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero to end Stoke’s 10-match unbeaten run.

Tottenham climbed to third place by beating Reading, 3-1. Clint Dempsey scored for Tottenham.

SKIING

TOUR DE SKI: Kikkan Randall of the United States and Finn Haagen Krogh of Norway won cross-country sprint races at Val Mustair, Switzerland.

Randall posted the fastest time in qualifying, then won her quarterfinal and semifinal races by wide margins before finishing more than 50 meters ahead of Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg of Norway in the final.
