PORTLAND — Allie Clement scored 17 points Saturday to lead McAuley to a 43-35 victory against Deering in an SMAA girls’ basketball game at McAuley High.

The game between two undefeated teams began Friday night but was postponed with 3:01 remaining in the first quarter due to wet floor conditions. Deering (8-1) led 6-5 when the game was stopped.

“I think (Friday) we didn’t come out as strong as we wanted to,” Clement said. “Today we got a second chance, which was kind of strange. We came out and we were so excited for this game because it was our first real test. Our team has worked really hard for a long time waiting for this moment and I think we came ready.”

Clement, a 5-foot-8 junior, scored a 3-pointer just after the restart to give the Lions an 8-6 lead. McAuley (8-0) led the rest of the way.

Clement hit her third 3-pointer of the opening half to begin the second quarter. The Lions closed out the half on a 7-1 run, highlighted by five points by Victoria Lux, to carry a 26-15 lead into the half.

“We were just out of sync (Friday) night to start the game,” said McAuley Coach Bill Goodman. “We were able to regroup today and bring the energy. All the girls came in today and brought the energy, and that’s what started it.”

McAuley kept the pressure on in the second half, not allowing the Rams to put together any kind of extended offensive surge.

Deering committed 10 turnovers in the opening half and 11 more in the third quarter alone.

McAuley ended up outscoring the Rams 11-8 in the third quarter – with Clement registering seven points and Sarah Clement adding the other four – to carry a comfortable 37-23 lead in the final period.

“I told the girls at the half that it was 0-0,” said Goodman. “Deering is well coached, they are a veteran team and they are not going to give up. We told the girls that we needed the third quarter to be good and it was pretty good.”

The Rams scratched their way back within striking distance in the fourth quarter.

Marissa McMillan scored six of her seven points in the period to move Deering within seven points with 45 seconds remaining.

“These two schools play hard against each other all the time,” said Deering Coach Mike Murphy, who received a third-quarter technical foul and clearly was not happy with the outcome.

Alexis Stephenson led the Rams with 12 points.
