A national advocacy group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues has nominated the Portland Press Herald and its columnist Bill Nemitz as finalists in its 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s awards celebrate outstanding representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and its allies on TV, in film, and in the news, the group says.

Nominees are selected by juries of volunteers with interest and expertise in the particular media categories they judge.

The Press Herald was nominated for outstanding newspaper coverage along with USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Baltimore Sun and the Sioux City Journal in Iowa.

Nemitz was nominated in the outstanding newspaper columnist category, along with columnists from The New York Times, The Miami Herald, The Washington Post and The Baltimore Sun.

The winners will be announced at events this spring in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
