Morin resigns as football coach after 16 seasons with Massabesic

John Morin, who led Massabesic High to its only football state championship in 2000, resigned as head coach of the Mustangs after 16 seasons.

Morin, who was out of town for personal reasons and unavailable for comment, coached Massabesic to 11 playoff appearances. The Mustangs were 12-0 in winning the Class A state championship in 2000.

In a statement released by the school, Athletic Director Brendan Scully wrote that Morin felt the program needed a change.

“And the most effective way for that to happen is from the top down,” wrote Scully. “He believes this is what is best for football in the district and for all those involved.”

Morin will remain at the school as an assistant principal.

BOYS’ HOCKEY: Shayne Plummer scored the winning goal 6:18 into overtime to give Bonny Eagle (7-2) a 2-1 win over Noble-Wells (5-6) at the Rochester Ice Arena in Rochester, N.H.

Plummer set up Josh Bagley in the first period as the Scots took a 1-0 lead. Noble-Wells tied it at 3:33 of the third period when Dean Pease converted a pass from Ryan Marsh.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Junior guard Torie St. Pierre scored 15 points to lead Berwick Academy to a 48-31 win over Brewster Academy (5-8) at South Berwick.

Berwick (9-3) took a 25-11 lead in the first half. Maggie DuChene scored six of her nine points in the first half and finished with eight rebounds.

LUGE

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Two-time Olympic luge champion Armin Zoeggeler of Italy will not compete next month so he can fully recover from injuries for the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.

Zoeggeler, who was third at a World Cup event Saturday, has been dealing with both shoulder and neck problems.

The 39-year-old, who won Olympic gold at the games in 2002 and 2006, has 16 world championship medals — including six individual golds — and is considered one of the greatest in the sport.

FIGURE SKATING

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev of Russia lead after the short dance portion of ice dance at Zagreb, Croatia.

Another Russian pair, Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov, is in second place, followed by Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy.

Defending champions Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat of France are not competing because of injuries.

Bobrova and Soloviev lead with a score of 69.42.

PREMIER LEAGUE: David Beckham’s teenage son just might be the next person in his family to play in the Premier League.

Thirteen-year-old Brooklyn Beckham, the oldest of Beckham’s four children, is having a tryout with London club Chelsea and played in an under-14 game Tuesday at the team’s training facility, people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.
