SCARBOROUGH – Scarborough High School Principal Dean Auriemma has resigned his position but will continue working with the school department through the end of the school year.

In a letter sent to parents on Friday, Superintendent George Entwistle said Auriemma “recognized that the demands of the job of high school principal are not compatible with meeting the needs of his family.” Auriemma’s resignation was effective immediately although he will continue to work with the school in another capacity.

Auriemma became high school principal in July 2010, according to district officials.

“Mr. Auriemma has made significant contributions to Scarborough High School and to the Scarborough School District, and for those contributions we are indeed appreciative,” Entwistle said in the news release.

“The improvement work at Scarborough High School, however, is ongoing and needs to continue uninterrupted. With this goal in mind, Mr. Auriemma and I have agreed that it is in the best interest of the school for him to step down immediately and fulfill the remainder of his 2012-13 contract performing work that will contribute to important district-wide quality improvement initiatives.”

Entwistle did not say specifically what that work will be.

Entwistle, meanwhile, appointed a four-member school leadership team to take over day-to-day management of the school.

The team will be led by Monique Culbertson, the district’s director of curriculum and instruction.

The school department will launch a nationwide search for a new principal with a goal of selecting a candidate to be in place by July 1, Entwistle said.
