After the record-breaking snowstorm of the past weekend, milder air will bring melting to the region today. Of course, it’s going to take more than a day of rain and temperatures in the 40s to melt this snowpack, but every little bit helps.

Warmer air is streaming north this morning ahead of a warm front. As this air rides over the cold air at the surface, some snow, freezing rain and eventually just plain rain will break out across the region.  I don’t expect the rain to make it past the foothills, so although ski areas may see some sleet or freezing rain, plain rain will not be a problem. 

Because of the wintry mix, a winter weather advisory is in effect this morning and into the early afternoon for the western counties of the state. Look for very slippery travel to develop today on many roads before they are treated.

After this area of precipitation moves away from the region the next few days look like perfect winter weather. Tuesday and Wednesday look to be dry with lots of sunshine.  Temperatures will be in the upper 20s to lower 30s at the ski slopes to near 40 at the coast.  If you are thinking about skiing, snowmobiling or snowshoeing, the midweek weather will cooperate.   

On Thursday we will watch a weather system pass just to the south of New England.  Right now, the storm looks to stay offshore and not bring any snow to Maine; however, I will be watching computer model guidance quite closely as this can change.

The weekend should be dry and the start of next week looks quite cold but storm free.
