You may have heard about some potential snow tonight from another coastal storm. The good news folks — if you don’t want more snow — is that the storm isn’t going to hit us. All indications are, as the storm passes out to sea overnight and early Thursday, the snow shield will try to move north, but will be unsuccessful.

Tonight, areas to the south of Boston and towards Cape Cod could see a dusting to up to 2" of snow. Across southern Maine a few clouds will increase, but there will not be any precipitation. The bottom line, this is a non-event. Once the clouds clear very early tomorrow sunshine will prevail and temperatures will once again rise into upper 30s to the lower 40s.

Friday, we will lose some of the sunshine, but gain several degrees in temperature. As a matter of fact, a few spots will make a run at 45°F and this means quite a bit more melting of the deep snow-pack. Saturday is a transitional day. A cold front will pass through the area and may bring a rain or snow shower in the morning. Skies will be partly sunny and temperatures still above freezing in the afternoon.

Our weather the rest of the weekend will be dry, but much colder. Highs on Sunday, even with sunshine, will struggle into the mid-20s. After the mild weather of the end of this week, Sunday will feel downright wintry. Additionally, the melting snow will refreeze solid. Skiing is fantastic heading into school vacation week and there is plenty of snow cover for all winter sports.

There is the potential for some storminess next week, but I am not going to speculate how much or even what form any precipitation would take, it’s just too early.

This weekend marks the first time since late fall that we will have over 10 hours and 30 minutes of daylight. The sun is rapidly growing stronger and higher in the sky. In the chart below, notice how fast we gain light each day (this is for Portland).

 

Also, it’s interesting that the sun, at noon, will be another 2 degrees higher in just the next week. By June, that angle will reach a whopping 71° relative to the horizon. What may be counter-intuitive is that the sun is also growing further away each day. The warmer weather doesn’t from the sun getting close, just shining more directly upon us and more of it.
