AUBURN, Ala. – Damek Tomscha led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run to lift Auburn over Maine 3-2 in a season-opening college baseball game Friday.

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by Mike Connolly. The Black Bears made it 2-1 in the top of the seventh when Colin Gay hit an RBI double.

Tommy Lawrence gave up two runs and struck out four over seven innings for Maine.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

SOUTHERN MAINE 3, UMASS-BOSTON 2: Kailey Bubier scored her second goal of the game 2:02 into overtime on an assist from Kaleigh Heath to lift the Huskies (7-11-6, 6-7-4) to an ECAC East win over the Beacons (8-12-4, 5-8-4) at Boston.

After the teams traded goals in the second period, the Huskies took a 2-1 lead on a power-play goal by Erin Banfield with 11:53 left in regulation. UMass-Boston got the equalizer with just 25 seconds remaining.

MEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 6, TUFTS 1: Connor Quinn had a goal and two assists, and John McGinnis had three assists to help the Polar Bears (18-2-2, 12-2-2 NESCAC) beat the Jumbos (7-14-2, 2-13-2) at Brunswick.

Colin Downey and Ollie Koo added a goal and an assist each, and Steve Messina made 27 saves for Bowdoin.

UNE 2, NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 2: Zach Lokey and Adam Laite each scored for the Nor’easters (6-15-2, 4-12-1) as they twice rallied from goal deficits and played to a tie against the Pilgrims (8-12-4, 6-8-3) in an ECAC East game at Henniker, N.H.

Lokey also had an assist for the Nor’easters and UNE goalie Ian Edwards finished with 35 saves.

ST. ANSELM 6, USM 4: Tim King scored twice and Tucker Mullin had three assists for the Hawks (12-8-3, 8-7-2 ECAC East), who took a 3-0 lead in the first period and held off the Huskies (7-17, 4-13) at Manchester, N.H.

Matt MacDonald and Alex Pompeo scored short-handed goals for Southern Maine, which twice got within a goal. Zach Dymock and Troy Thibodeau also scored.

COLBY 2, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 1: Jonathan Sdao scored from Matt Gelnaw and Nick Trepp with 1:02 left in the third period, and Sam Parker made 36 save to lift the Mules (6-14-3, 4-11-2) to a NESCAC win over the Camels (7-13-3, 3-11-3) at Waterville.

Colby trailed 1-0 after one period but rallied to tie the game on a goal by Ray Zeek midway through the second.

With the win, the Mules control their own destiny to reach the NESCAC tournament. Colby hosts Tufts today at 3 p.m. to close out the season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 66, VERMONT TECH 56: Nyalieb Deng scored 20 points to pace the Seawolves as they led by as many 21 points in the second half and held on for a win over the Knights in the quarterfinals of the Yankee Small College Conference tournament at Auburn.

Tianna Burton added 15 points and Alicia Hoyt scored 14 for the Seawolves, who advance to face Central Maine CC on Sunday at 2 p.m.

TOP 25 WOMEN

(6) CALIFORNIA 79, (15) UCLA 51: Gennifer Brandon scored 16 points to lead a balanced offense as California handed the Bruins their first home loss of the season.

Brittany Boyd and Layshia Clarendon had 14 points each, and Reshanda Gray added 10 to lead the Bears (22-2, 12-1 Pac-12) to their 10th straight win.

Atonye Nyingifa scored 20 points for UCLA (19-5, 10-3 Pac-12), which had won six straight since a loss at California on Jan. 20.

Cal built a 19-point lead in the first half and led by 18 at the break. UCLA got no closer than 11 points in the second half. The Bruins shot just 34 percent (19 of 56) from the field.

Cal hasn’t lost since a defeat to No. 4 Stanford on Jan. 8.

(21) COLORADO 55, ARIZONA 42: Jen Reese scored 15 points and Colorado never trailed in beating Arizona at Tucson, Ariz.

Lexy Kresl, Chucky Jeffery and Arielle Robertson each scored eight points for the Buffaloes (19-5, 8-5 Pac-12), who have won four in a row.

All of Colorado’s losses have been to ranked teams — including two each to Stanford and California.

The Buffaloes broke away from a tie at 11 with a 13-0 run, and stayed in control after that. Colorado led 30-23 at the break and scored the first 10 points of the second half.

Jeffery also had six assists and four steals. Robertson led the Buffs with seven rebounds.

Carissa Crutchfield was the only player in double figures with 13 points for the Wildcats (11-13, 3-10), who have lost eight in a row.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

(15) GEORGETOWN 62, CINCINNATI 55: Otto Porter Jr. scored 16 points while playing in foul trouble, and Georgetown wasted a 12-point lead in the second half before rallying for its seventh straight win at Cincinnati.

Markel Starks hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 5:35 left and made five free throws in final minute, helping the Hoyas (19-4, 9-3) stay atop the Big East.

Cincinnati (19-7, 7-6) has lost three of its last four games with poor shooting.
