AUGUSTA — Zacharia Mohamed scored 25 points and Tim Robertson added 23 as A.R. Gould topped North Haven 64-49 in a Western Class D boys’ basketball quarterfinal at the Augusta Civic Center.

A.R. Gould (12-7), the No. 4 seed, jumped out to an eight-point lead after one quarter, as Mohamed scored seven points in the first three minutes.

Fifth-seeded North Haven (14-4) closed to within two early in the second quarter when Dalton Hornby made a layup, Avery Waterman hit a 3-pointer and Ethan Mao sank a free throw.

But Robertson answered with eight points in 1:10, including a 3-pointer.

“I love it when we connect, playing great basketball like that,” Mohammed said.

After switching to man-to-man defense in the second quarter, the Bears slowed North Haven’s offense and opened a 33-19 halftime lead. They maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.

“We wanted them to shoot the 3s with a hand in their face. When we switched to man-to-man, we played well,” said A.R. Gould Coach Chad Sturgis.

“Offensively, we are used to physical basketball. Sometimes, it’s hard to call off the dogs.”

Waterman scored 27 points for North Haven, including three 3-pointers. But the sophomore guard, who has scored as many as 37 points in a game, said his team couldn’t do anything more than match A.R. Gould shot for shot after falling behind.

“I figure if you’re going to be a team leader, you have to be (a leader) even when your team is down,” Waterman said. “We started off slow, and defense-wise we were a little sloppy. We couldn’t get rebounds; that was a big problem.”
