Freeport’s girls’ skiing team clinched its second straight overall Class C state championship, and Fort Kent edged Freeport to repeat as boys’ champion as the three-day competition concluded Wednesday with slalom races at Bigrock Mountain in Mars Hill.
The Falcons finished with 195 points in the girls’ standings, easily beating runner-up Fort Kent (268). Individual results from the girls’ slalom were unavailable.
Fort Kent used a strong performance in slalom to overtake Freeport for the boys’ overall title, 153-157. The Warriors had four skiers in the top eight, led by runner-up Andrew Paradis (1:34.08). Louis Frumer of Waynflete won the race with a two-run combined time of 1:33.05. Blake Enrico (3rd, 1:34.35), Ryder Bennell (5th, 1:36.95) and Caleb Abbott (7th, 1:37.38) placed in the top 10 for Freeport. Isaac Salisbury (1:59.84) was the Falcons’ fourth scorer, in 27th place.
In addition to Paradis, Fort Kent got top-10 slalom finishes from Brandon Ouellette (4th, 1:34.52), Carter Voisine (6th, 1:36.96), and Brady Lizotte (8th, 1:38.73). The Warriors trailed Freeport by 18 points going into the final event.
CLASS B: Yarmouth’s boys’ and girls’ teams were in first place after the opening 5-kilometer classic race at Black Mountain in Rumford.
The Clipper boys had a 24-31 lead over Maranacook, and the girls had a 25-33 edge over Caribou after placing four skiers in the top 10.
Braden Becker of Yarmouth was the individual winner, posting a time of 14 minutes, 21.3 seconds. Jackson Hall (4th, 15:09), Jasper Houston (9th, 15:50.4) and Sam Alexander (11th, 16:02.3) also scored for the Clippers.
The girls’ race was won by Maranacook’s Caroline Colan in 17:11.4, followed by Sarah Doak (17:29.5) of Caribou and Caitlin Teare (17:34.9) of Yarmouth. Ellie Teare (6th, 18:15.1), Ihila Lesnikova (7th, 18:15.4) and Olivia Conrad (9th, 18:19.6) were close behind for Yarmouth.
The Yarmouth girls are seeking their seventh consecutive overall championship. The Clippers are also the defending overall boys’ champions.
The competition continues Thursday with freestyle races at Black Mountain and giant slalom races at Mt. Abram. The final slalom races are scheduled for Friday.
