LEWISTON – Nick Bagley and Cam Brochu each had a goal and two assists to lead Scarborough to a 4-2 victory over Cheverus in a Western Class A boys’ hockey semifinal Saturday night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

The top-seeded Red Storm (19-1) will face second-seeded Falmouth (17-3-1) in the regional final Tuesday at the Colisee.

Scarborough, which converted 36 percent of its power-play chances during the regular season, used its dynamic power play to get past the fourth-seeded Stags (13-7). All four of its goals came with the man advantage, including the winner and an insurance marker during a five-minute power play awarded with seven minutes remaining in regulation.

“From the beginning of the year coach (Norm Gagne) has always said power play is the key and we have to capitalize on our opportunities,” Bagley said. “We were pretty successful on the power play against them before (4 of 5 in their last meeting, a 5-3 Scarborough victory in the regular-season finale) and we knew that was going to be a good chance.”

The breaking point for the Stags came when Andrew MacGillivray received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for checking from behind with 7:03 remaining.

Two minutes later, Jacob Gross broke a 2-2 tie, tipping a point shot by Bagley past Cheverus goalie Jason Blier. Jack Rousselle provided some breathing space when he scored with 10 seconds left in the extended power play.

“It was anybody’s game until the five-minute penalty, I think,” said Cheverus Coach Dan Lucas. “Best power play in the state, game over.”

Despite owning a territorial advantage in the opening period, as evidenced by a 17-5 edge in shots, Scarborough found itself trailing 1-0. James Hannigan took a pass from Liam Fitzpatrick and was able to get free from the pursuing defense and beat Dalton Finley.

“We weren’t blocking their shots and we were giving them clean shots,” said Gagne. “That’s not us. We usually get a piece of the puck or block them completely.

“They didn’t have a lot of shots (in the first period) but they were quality shots.”

Special teams pushed Scarborough into the lead in the second. The Red Storm got on the board during a two-man advantage early in the period. Bagley jumped into the play from his defense position and buried a pin-point shot high to the glove side.

The Red Storm grabbed a 2-1 lead with nine minutes left in the period. Brochu gathered in a loose puck and roofed a shot over Blier’s glove.

Cheverus evened things up four minutes into the third. Cameron McLain and Fitzpatrick worked a give-and-go off the end boards, with Fitzpatrick stuffing home the return pass.
