Italy, which had never won more than a game in either of the two previous Classics, scored eight runs after Canada cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the seventh.

Jonathan Schoop hit a three-run homer, and former UMaine player Curt Smith also homered as the Netherlands surprised Cuba 6-2 in a second-round game at Tokyo.
