Italy pulls another upset at World Baseball Classic

Italy followed its come-from-behind win over Mexico on Thursday night with a 14-4 thumping of Canada on Friday in Phoenix to move to 2-0 in the first round of the World Baseball Classic.

Chris Colabello, who played for the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats last year, drove in four runs with four hits, including a three-run homer.

Italy, which had never won more than a game in either of the two previous Classics, scored eight runs after Canada cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the seventh.

• Jonathan Schoop hit a three-run homer, and former UMaine player Curt Smith also homered as the Netherlands surprised Cuba 6-2 in a second-round game at Tokyo.

Two-time defending champion Japan defeated Taiwan 4-3 in 10 innings. Cuba and Taiwan meet in an elimination game Saturday.

HIGH SCHOOLS

INDOOR TRACK: Lake Region’s Kate Hall became Maine’s fastest-ever schoolgirl in the 200 meters and placed third in the emerging elite race at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York.

Hall won her heat in 24.81 seconds, breaking the record of 25.46 held by Kristen Slotnick of Brunswick. She ran 24.88 in the finals.

Denzel Tomaszewski of Wells lowered his own Maine all-time mark in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.04 but missed qualifying for the finals by .01. His previous best was 7.15.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Brian Hartline, Miami’s leading receiver last season, agreed to terms on a five-year deal for nearly $31 million.

Quarterback Matt Moore signed a two-year contract to remain the backup to Ryan Tannehill.

• Carolina released starting cornerback Chris Gamble to get under the salary cap.

• Arizona cut Adrian Wilson, a five-time Pro Bowl safety.

ALGARVE CUP: Ali Krieger and Whitney Engen scored their first international goals as the U.S. women stayed atop their group with a 5-0 rout of China at Albufeira, Portugal.

• U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo will be sidelined for three-to-four months following surgery to repair torn cartilage in her left wrist.

U.S. MEN: Goalkeeper Tim Howard has two broken bones in his back and likely will miss World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico this month.

GOLF

PGA: Andres Romero shot his second straight 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Scott Brown in the Puerto Rico Open at Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

DOGSLED RACING

IDITAROD: Aliy Zirkle, last year’s runner-up, grabbed the lead by being the first to leave the village of Anvik, Alaska, the first checkpoint on the Yukon River.

Four-time champ Martin Buser was first into the checkpoint but took a break, while Zirkle blew out of the village one minute after arriving. Mushers are required to take an eight-hour break at any checkpoint on the Yukon River.
