UTICA, N.Y. – Ridge Garbutt scored the go-ahead goal with 4:24 remaining, and Utica rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat Bowdoin 4-2 in an NCAA Division III men’s hockey quarterfinal Saturday night.

Bowdoin (23-4-2) opened a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Ollie Koo and Harry Matheson. Jordan Hobalca got one back for the Pioneers (21-5-1) just 45 seconds into the second period, and Trever Hertz tied it 3:28 into the third.

Eric Peterson clinched the win with an empty-net goal in the final minute.

BASEBALL

MAINE 2, WEST VIRGINIA 1: Mike Connolly singled home Alex Calbrick in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Black Bears (7-10) beat West Virginia (7-10) at Port Charlotte, Fla.

Calbick singled to center and advanced on a sacrifice by Brian Doran and Eric White’s single up the middle before scoring on Connolly’s single to right.

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE: Alex Lorenc went 6 for 7 with a double and six RBI, Mike Pratt was 4 for 7 with three doubles and seven RBI, and the Monks opened their season by routing the Anchormen (0-3) twice at Myrtle Lake, Fla.

St. Joseph’s took a 9-1 win in the opener, then won the late game 11-0 in five innings.

SOFTBALL

MAINE LOSES TWICE: Macy Jones singled home Alicia Walker in the bottom of the third and Penn State went on to beat the Black Bears (1-17) 3-0 at Clearwater, Fla., after Maine lost earlier in the day to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 13-0 in five innings.

MEN’S LACROSSE

PLYMOUTH STATE 16, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 5: Mike Ventura scored four goals, Zach Frank had a goal and four assists, and the Panthers (2-0) overcame an early deficit to rout the Nor’easters (2-1) at Biddeford.

Pat Wolfe had a goal and an assist for UNE.

CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 13, BOWDOIN 12: Chad Sawyer scored the winning goal with eight seconds remaining as Connecticut College captured an opener at Brunswick.

MIDDLEBURY 10, BATES 8: Jon Broome scored four times for the Panthers, who used five straight goals in the third quarter to take a 9-5 lead in a NESCAC opener at Lewiston.

COLBY 11, AMHERST 10: Ian Deveau scored with 1:05 left in the first overtime as the Mules won an opener at Waterville.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

COLBY 10, AMHERST 7: Lindsey McKenna scored three goals and Dana Swaffield broke a 6-6 tie with 15:47 remaining as the Mules won a NESCAC opener at Amherst, Mass.

MIDDLEBURY 20, BATES 4: Kathy Yannopoulos scored twice for the Bobcats, who fell to the Panthers in a NESCAC opener at Middlebury, Vt.

BOWDOIN 8, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 5: Carolyn Gorajek scored four goals in the first half as the Polar Bears took a 7-0 lead in a NESCAC opener at New London, Conn.

Lindsay Picard added a goal and an assist for Bowdoin.

INDOOR TRACK

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: David Pless won his third straight shot put title and earned All-America honors for the eighth time, helping the Bates men to a fifth-place finish at the Division III championships in Naperville, Ill.

His best mark of 60 feet, 3 inches came on his first throw of the finals and was 193/4 inches further than runner-up Fred Fulton of Messiah.

James LePage of Cumberland ran the 800 in 1:53.19 to take fourth place for the Bobcats, who finished with 23 points. Wisconsin-LaCrosse won with 74 points.

Southern Maine’s Kevin Desmond was eighth in the 800 at 1:53.04, and Coby Horowitz of Bowdoin took third in the mile with a time of 4:09.80.

In the women’s meet, Emily Tolman of Scarborough and Brittney Bell of Poland helped Colby’s 1,600 relay team take fourth place with a time of 3:51.58.

Sanford’s Rachel Schneider, a senior at Georgetown, finished ninth in the mile at the Division I meet in 4:43.84, missing All-America honors by .18.
