LAKE WALES, Fla. – Mike Pratt and Brandon Chase each drove in a run as St. Joseph’s earned a 2-1 win Monday over Wheaton, the nation’s top-ranked team in Division III baseball.

For the Monks, who are now 5-0 on their Southern swing, Nic Lops had a pair of hits and Alex Valenti threw the first five innings while allowing one run with four strikeouts for the win.

TNCC 7, SMCC 4: Jeremy Gearty homered for SMCC, as the Seawolves dropped their spring-season opener to Thomas Nelson Community College at Hampton, Va.

Overall, including fall play, the Seawolves are now 11-6-1.

SOFTBALL

MONKS SWEEP: St. Joseph’s won a doubleheader against two opponents at Fort Myers, Fla., beating North Park 5-4 in the opening game and Delaware Valley 4-1 in the nightcap.

MEN’S SOCCER

BOWDOIN: The college has hired Brunswick native Scott Wiercinski as head coach.

Wiercinski was an assistant coach at Bowdoin in 2000 and at Brown University from 2001-05. He spent the past seven years as head coach at the University of Chicago. His teams have compiled a record of 144-75-35 with nine NCAA tournament appearances.

CROSS COUNTRY

MAINE’S Corey Conner, a senior, was named a United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Second Team All-American.

Conner placed 12th in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 16:02.44. She previously earned the honor for the 2012 outdoor season and the 2011 indoor season.
